9TH SEPTEMBER 2007 DA EVENTS FROM RIPON
The continuing sunny weather encouraged a superb turnout of 48 riders for the first DA event run from Ripon. It was based on the country lanes to the north of the city. The start was at the Spa Gardens Sun Parlour Cafe where the owners supported the event with a warm welcome and facilities for the organisers.
The 100km route headed North via Kirkby Malzeard to Masham, and then on to Jervaulx Abbey for a cafe stop. Continuing to East Witton and then along the lanes east of Leyburn the route passed through Snape, and under the A1 to Skipton-on-Swale. It was then a return to Ripon via Topcliffe, Cundall and Boroughbridge. The 50km route similarly took the riders to Masham and then turned back via Snape and south to Ripon. ![Nr Ulshaw [Middleham and Penhill in distance]](R3.jpg)
The finish at the Spa Gardens Cafe was buzzing as this is such a popular destination for cyclists. A large group from Otley CC who were enjoying a break on a long ride joined us at the cafe. Thanks to all the riders who supported this first Ripon event, and particular thanks to those cyclists braving their first DA Event. I hope they will go on to try other Events in the future - see the CTC North Yorks website for details. More next year! Martin Weeks
DISTRICT ASSOCIATION TOURIST COMPETITION News just received in the post from CTC HQ is about the success of Richard and Chris Delf in the District Association Tourist Competition. Richard has won the First Junior (Boy) and Chris has come second overall in the competition. To quote from the Co-ordinators Report, "Chris Delf, a previous winner of the men's title in 1990 makes a welcome return to the competition filling 2nd place, and at the same time his son Richard Delf with a superb score of 101 points (probably the highest in the history of the competition for a junior) is the best Junior Boy." I am sure the NYDA Committee will want me to express our congratulations to Chris and Richard for this fantastic result. Yvonne Skelton NYDA Secretary 16 January 2007

NORTH YORKSHIRE DISTRICT ASSOCIATION CYCLISTS’ TOURING CLUB 32nd ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 5TH NOVEMBER 2006 - 1215 HOURS - GALTRES CENTRE, EASINGWOLD MINUTES
Present: 25 members of the District Association, National Councillor Arthur Spurr.
| 1.0 | The notice published in Cycle was read out by the Secretary. | | 2.0 | Election of a Chairperson - Mike Haseltine was elected as chairperson for the AGM, in the absence of Gerry Boswell. | | 3.0 | Obituaries - Arthur Beecroft & Keith Smith were remembered. | | 4.0 | Apologies for absence. Alan Luxton - National Councillor, Gerry Boswell, Trevor Godfrey, Sue Threadgold (Treasurer, WheelEasy), Peter Gray, Jim Buddo, Walter Rich. | | 5.0 | Minutes of the 31st AGM were approved as a correct record and signed by the Chairperson. | | 6.0 | Matters arising from the minutes None | | 7.0 | Approval of Annual Report for the year ending 30th September 2005 (Secretary's Report attached). The following additional information was provided at the meeting. | | 7.1 | NY Moors Assn Representative: Ron Healey was thanked for his attendance at their AGM and for updating this meeting. | | 7.2 | Membership: Mike Haseltine apologised for the lay out in the Secretaries report, and explained the table. He reported that the accuracy of the figures continues to be much improved with the new CTC Agency. | | 7.3 | Rights and Planning: Ron Healey briefly summarised his activities this year, but a plea was also made for Sections to be on the look out for activities which needed Ron's attention. | | 7.4 | Events: Keith Benton reported that the sections organised 12 rides this year. York organised the most as might be expected but Ripon as well as two members of the Ryedale/Scarborough area also contributed to the total. Most rides received good support with the Wigginton 100km in October drawing the most riders whilst at the other end only 2 riders completed the off-road event - scant reward for all the work put in by Andrew Kirby and Peter Gray in organising the day. | | 7.5 | 3 or 4 riders (details of just one event awaited) are contesting the trophy for the most rides of the year. | | 7.6 | Rides this year ranged from a 30ish miles off-road and 50km at Easingwold to the 300 km event from Wigginton which again attracted only a hardy few from the DA though fortunately there is usually a good turnout from away riders - this year it was wet, wet, wet!! A one-off this year was the DA chairpersons 50th birthday bash and a good time was had by all (luckily we manage to prevent Gerry blowing any candles out). | | 7.7 | A brief report such as this would not be complete without mention of the helpers who make the events possible. Mike and Ann Haseltine do a stirling job when events start at Wiggy; Ann in providing much of the baking so looked forward to by riders and Mike in the time he puts into the catering services on the day In Andrew Kirby we have a tremendous behind the scenes worker and his work in providing route sheets and entry forms linked to the website is a great asset. | | 7.8 | Next year sees a new organiser in the shape of Bret Hill who is organising early season rides. If there are any others out there who would like to try their hand they can be assured of a warm welcome. | | 7.9 | Thanks for all your support over the few years I have done the job - I will be only too happy to give my successor as much help and support as I can. | | 7.10 | Sections: For the Wednesday Wheelers Peter Holyoake gave an update on ths particularly active group. | | 7.11 | With regard Harrogate WheelEasy, Malcolm updated the meeting on the cycling on the Stray campaign in Harrogate and attempts to get a Sustrans route from Harrogate to Ripon and the Nidderdale. WheelEasy now has 60 paid up members, supported by a new developed Website, similar to the Ripon website. If any section is interested in developing a website these sites would provide a template saving on the costs of the original design. | | 7.12 | Ripon is looking to run a fresh campaign in the Spring to bring it's membership up to previous levels. Social events are being planned including a Christmas dinner, and a YHA accommodated event in the summer. The club is investigating joint YHA membership for the club, although Peter Holyoake warned that this type of membership may no longer be available. | | 7.13 | Scarborough Section has been quiet this year. John Puddephat explained he has been unable to lead rides and some of the other members have not been able to give support. | | 7.14 | Mention was made of the Regional Development Agency for North East England and its cycling support for attracting tourism. Paul Hepworth to forward details to the Secretary who will forward these on. | | 7.15 | The Secretary's report was approved. | | 8.0 | Treasurers report and approval of accounts for the year ending 30th September 2006: In the absence of Trevor Godfrey, the chairperson read out the report, as signed by the auditor. The report has to include all accounts for the Sections and as such the Sections are asked to promptly submit their reports at the end of the year (ie 30th September). Sections' reports must be audited, but it was noted that an independent examination of the accounts will suffice The report and accounts were approved. | | 9.0 | Elect Officers and Committee to serve until the 2007 AGM. | | 9.1 | The following were proposed, seconded and duly elected. | | POSITION | HOLDER 2006/7 | | President | Michael Haseltine | | | Vice-Presidents (max 6) | Ron Healey, | | | Keith Benton, | | | Walter Rich, | | | Peter Gray, | | | Michael Fielding | | | | | Secretary | Yvonne Skelton | | Assistant Secretary | Martin Weeks | | Membership Secretary | Michael Haseltine | | Events Secretary | Martin Weeks elected to replace Keith Benton who was standing down. | | Treasurer | Trevor Godfrey | | Rights/Planning Officer | Ron Healey | | Social Secretary | Gerry Boswell | | Press Secretary | Paul Hepworth | | General committee | David Preston, John Puddephatt | | | | | Representatives to Committee meetings: | | | Wednesday Wheelers | Peter Holyoake | | Ripon Section | Martin Weeks | | York Section | John Johnson | | Harrogate Section | David Preston | | | Delegate to Yorkshire & Humber Regional Committee | Ron Healey (Ron advised that whilst this body has no funds it is still worthwhile continuing with it) | | | 10.0 | To appoint an auditor: Keith Benton was appointed as auditor. | | 11.0 | To consider any motions submitted for consideration - none received | | 12.0 | Craven District Council - cycling festival May 2007. Members were happy to consider this - further details to be submitted to the January committee. | | 13.0 | Date & place of next AGM: 4 November 2007 at the Galtres Centre, at 1215 hours. | | 14.0 | Date and place of next committee meetings. 12th January 2007 Also 27th April 2007 and 7th September 2007.Paul Hepworth to book the room. | | 15.0 | Any other business | | 15.1 | It was agreed that the Wednesday Wheelers would be included as a separate section in the Secretary's report. (see minute 7.10) | | 15.2 | There was some discussion over insurance cover for CTC ride leaders, with the National Councillor Arthur Spurr giving some advice from HQ. It was suggested that a copy of the insurance policy be placed on the HQ website. If riders turn up for a ride and a ride leader is not present, then a ride leader should be elected |
The meeting closed at 1355 hours. Signed as a correct record ....................................................................................Chairperson Secretary ................................................................................................
CYCLISTS' TOURING CLUB NORTH YORKSHIRE DISTRICT ASSOCIATION 32nd Annual Report 1st October 2005 to 30th September 2006
This is my second year as NYDA Secretary. It's been another successful year for the Association, with my colleagues on the Committee working for us and cycling. I make no excuses for reminding you of what my colleagues they do, which includes:
| | DA administration and membership Social events including the awards evening and carol service Regular weekly rides Weekends away Audax events The York Cycle Show Campaigning Publicity Supporting national and local cycling events Rights and Planning Publicity And lots more |
And then there's my colleagues working in the Sections for us and cycling - more about that later in the Section reports. But if you are involved in any way with work for the District Association or Sections, don't forget to check that you are on the Volunteer Registration list, and if you are not, complete a form. These are available near the signing in form as you came in the door. There has, as usual, been three meetings of the Committee: April, September, and November 2006. Minutes are posted on the DA's website. Quite a lot of work has gone into developing existing and new websites. Websites for the Region now include:
Membership Mike continues to keep membership records accurate. He did a lot of hard work in 2005 unravelling the mess created by outsourcing. Mike reports: A year ago, we recorded a total membership of 1,161 members in the DA's area, while expressing some reservations on the accuracy of the information supplied to us. Since then, over 50 members who had been recorded as "lapsed" at 30th September 2005 have since renewed, and have been included in the 2005 total shown below along with correction of a few other identified errors in last year's figures. Thankfully, the service from the current membership agency in the past year has been much improved on that of their predecessors, and we have more confidence in the information While it is impossible to check every item of data reported, obvious errors each month have almost disappeared, and the only criticism that might now be levied is that the monthly lists could be published more promptly. The current total of 1,240 members in the DA is an all-time record, up by 79 on a year ago, and more than double the DA's total membership of 597 twenty years ago. The table below analyses the membership according to area, the numbers in brackets in the right-hand section showing the changes on the position reported a year ago. The few members who moved between areas of the DA during the year have been counted in their new areas throughout.
| Area | At 1st Oct'05 | Losses | Gains | At 30th Sep'06 | Change | Full & Commuted | Reduced Subs | Life & Honorary | | Craven | 118 | 26 | 21 | 113 | -5 | 58 (-6) | 52 (+2) | 3 (-1) | | Harrogate/W-dale | 280 | 57 | 59 | 282 | +2 | 144 (-10) | 128 (+20) | 10 (=) | | Richmond/H-ton | 148 | 25 | 37 | 160 | +12 | 82 (+1) | 69 (+13) | 9 (=) | | Ryedale | 58 | 16 | 13 | 55 | -3 | 34 (+2) | 20 (-5) | 1 (=) | | Scarborough | 86 | 22 | 21 | 85 | -1 | 42 (-2) | 40 (+1) | 3 (=) | | Selby/Tadcaster | 86 | 15 | 18 | 89 | +3 | 45 (-5) | 41 (+6) | 3 (+2) | | York | 440 | 69 | 85 | 456 | +16 | 236 (-1) | 199 (+9) | 21 (=) | | Total | 1,216 | 230 | 254 | 1,240 | +24 | 641 (-21) | 549 (+46) | 50 (+1) |
Rights and Planning Ron Healey's unceasing determination to have cyclists' needs recognised continues. Ron has prepared a separate report. Ron proposed a donation to the Sustran appeal for bridge maintenance funds and the committee agreed to a donation of £106 for a bridge, which has been recognised by a plaque Finance Trevor Godfrey cannot join us today but his report is attached. Trevor joined the committee at the same time as I did. Whilst Trevor is cautious with our funds, he is always willing to spend it for the benefit of members and cycling. Events Last year's social evening was again a success. The 2006 event will take place on the last Saturday in February 2007. Paul Hepworth, our Press Secretary usually comes up with an entertaining speaker, and this year it's the transport correspondent of BBC Look North. There has again been a full programme of Audax Events and the results are available on the NYDA website. Tockwith Carol service 2006 will be on Sunday December 10th at 1pm in the Methodist Chapel. Refreshments before and after in the Village Hall, courtesy of its Under 5's Group, with proceeds to their funds. Any budding Choristers or Lesson Readers please contact Paul Hepworth at paul(@sign)hepworth77.freeserve.co.uk Sections We have 4 sections within North Yorkshire DA - York, Ripon, Scarborough, and Harrogate. These sections report as follows: In York , Gerry Boswell reports that two groups go out on a Sunday and one group on a Wednesday evening. The Wednesday evening group will be winding up at the beginning of January until the light nights in the Spring. They go out at 7pm and are usually back by 1030 pm, with a half-way stop for refreshment (normally in a pub). The Wednesday evening group has diminished to 3-5 riders - but it does seem that there has been a lot of wet Wednesdays. On Sundays the "Intermediates" (but actually, the hard riders) do about 80 plus miles but this number has diminished to 4 or 5. The other group, the "Social" group have two groups, comprising one group which doesn't want to go too far for too long, and the other group doing 60 plus miles. This year has seen a number of events, such as the tour of Normandy, a group visit to the CTC birthday rides in Dumfries, the Semain Federale 2006 Chateuroux, a trip to Esk Dale, and plans ahead for Majorca March 2007. Harrogate Section: Dave Preston reports that the section is very healthy. The newly-formed CTC Section - WheelEasy, gets stronger and stronger, thanks to Malcolm Margolis. The key to this Section's success is regular coverage in the local press, and keeping everyone informed using emails and the internet WheelEasy became the voice for cycling in Harrogate when "No cycling" signs on the Stray were re-painted, resulting in loud protests from many cyclists. Malcolm arranged a demonstration by some 200 cyclists which attracted much press and political interest. Regular Sunday rides are organised to suit people's needs, with the development of a fitter group now regularly doing 40mile plus rides and challenging the name "Wheeleasy" . New members arrive every week. Typically at least 30 riders appeared on Sundays, meeting at Hornbeam Park. Wednesday evening rides in the summer led by Martin Weeks are popular for riders who want a quick blast, at a brisk pace. Typically at least 10 riders turn out for these events. Wednesday all day rides continue throughout the year with 4 regular riders, including Dave Preston. WheelEasy were included as a section of the NYDA at its September 2006 committee meeting, thus opening up for them opportunities of the national CTC organisation and links with other groups in the area. As a result of this inclusion WheelEasy received funding of £423.58 held over from the former Harrogate Section. They also have the right for a place for 2 representatives on NYDA Committee meetings. WheelEasy members have also received two half-price annual memberships of the CTC. Ripon Loiterers: The Committee donated £150 towards the Loiterers website which is now up and running. At the AGM thanks were expressed to the DA for the financial support. Regular emails and the new website keeps everyone informed. The club has reached a bit of a plateau on membership, but this should only be viewed against the backdrop of so many very successful recruitment years; typically between 10 to 20 riders turn out for the Sunday rides and there is always an easy or average ride, together with a harder ride for the keener riders. The challenging group certainly gives the lie to the club name. The out standing event of the year was the Section being awarded the CTC Volunteer Group of the year, and the award was made at the York Rally. There was a successful ride of the Coast to Coast route (in a day!), and for next year club weekends are being planned at hostels and camping. Scarborough Committee member John Puddephatt continues to support a small group in Scarborough Publicity Our Press Secretary, Paul Hepworth was awarded the CTC "Volunteer of the Year" award for Yorkshire & Humberside, in respect of his work as York Cycle Show Committee Chair, during a period of post-Ascot turmoil plus two rapid changes of Secretary. After escorting the Civic Party round the 2006 York Cycle Show, Paul Hepworth was requisitioned by the Sherriff (and Sustrans Ranger) Richard Baldwin, to assist with a sponsored bike ride in May 2007, to raise funds for the Lord Mayor's Charity. The likely date is Saturday May 12th, ie the day before Coxwold Sunday, with departure from Knavesmire to Naburn (short option) or Riccall (long option). Community Halls will be the ride destinations, in both cases. More details nearer the time but please support us if you can. This may become an annual event. The NYDA has also been asked to support a May 2007 cycling event in Settle. This is being organised by Craven District Council in partnership with local businesses, cycle groups, and the National Park. We have been asked to provide ride leaders out of settle. Details to follow. Once gain, Paul would be grateful if colleagues across the county would acts as his "eyes and ears", and bring to his attention any media reporting that may require a formal response. Conclusion The York Section is diminishing in numbers, the Ripon Section has reached a plateau, and the Harrogate Section is growing. The last three annual reports have highlighted the need to encourage younger members. A glance around each section, shows Ripon Loiterer's and Wheeleasy Sections to be youngish, and York to be ageing. There is, of course, nothing wrong with being old from an individual point of view, but it is not in the interests of any of the clubs not to be diverse in terms of age, gender, etc. Websites and communication by eMail is certainly effective at keeping members in touch and makes the running of the Clubs a lot easier than might otherwise be the case. A particular Welcome this year to WheelEasy, a new section to the District. We hope to see a lot of combined activities for all sections.
