Brief history of CTC York Section


Formed in 1976 as part of the Cyclists' Touring Club (CTC - re-branded 2016 to Cycling UK).

York Section (also known by York CTC and CTC York) - was initially form in 1976 along with North Yorkshire DA by a small group of cycling enthusiasts. North Yorkshire DA was the parent group and represented York Section and other sections within North Yorkshire to CTC Headquarters.


1984 - York Wednesday Wheelers was form.

A group of CTC members in York who were available for a mid-week ride formed York Wednesday Wheelers. The initial intension was to stop along the way taking photos and taking in the scenery along with historical sites.


2010 CTC Re-organisation.

CTC York / York CTC came into being when CTC goes through a major re-organisation in preparation to getting charity status. North Yorkshire DA becomes CTC North Yorkshire and no-longer represented York CTC to CTC Headquarters. Along with this change other groups could now become affiliated members of the CTC.


2012 CTC gets charity status in England and Wales.

CTC gets charity status in England and Wales "Cyclists' Touring Club" charity No. 1147607


2016 CTC re-branded to Cycling UK.

In order for the general public to have a better understanding of what the CTC does and represents, a re-branding exercise took place, creating Cycling UK. CTC Group names are un-changed, despite the re-branding to Cycling UK.




General Information.

We currently only have one ride a week on a Sunday and a list of rides can be found by selecting here. Sunday rides tend to be between 1½ to 2 hours of cycling between stops.
